SLUMP BOWLS
These bowls were an experiment in pushing materiality to its inherent limit. As the bowls were thrown on the pottery wheel, the clay was intentionally distended in certain areas such that it would slump, or collapse, onto itself. This was a very precarious process, as distending the clay too far would result in catastrophic failure and tearing of the bowl. Once the slump occurred, the throwing process was stopped and care was taken to preserve the moment of collapse in the final form of the bowl.
Here, the material was allowed to enter into dialogue with the maker, and the form was the result of a fusion of intentions between the two.
